Influencer Kamlawatie de Haas

Interview December 2019

Could you share with us some information of your family life?
I am a mom of 2 kids (twins) and, through my adopted family, I have 2 brothers and 1 sister. Through my biological parents, I have 18 other brothers and sisters. I was raised by my adopted parents. I was born in Surinam and grew up in Holland. When I was 40 years old, I met my biological father for the first time in the woods of Surinam. I finally felt “home”. As I grew up in Holland I always, since I was a young child, felt a connection with Africa, the food, the dances, the colors, the clothes, the people and my biological father lived in the jungle, so when we met, I got a much better understanding of where this link with Africa came from. Surinam was “my” Africa, I encountered it there and then. Before that moment, I wasn’t aware of this. In that sense, I recognized part of me then, that is where “I connected with me roots”.

Were your parents supportive in whom you have become right now?
Well, yes and no. I claimed my freedom to be whom I am now, but that doesn’t necessarily mean they supported me in that journey.

Could you share with us some of your educational background and past professional experiences, as we know that you are a busy person?
After I had finished secondary school, I went to the Dance Academy; I have studied Interior Decoration; I have studied to become a management secretary; I am a 2 time certified a life coach and as part of my spiritual path, I have studied just to name a view Reiki, Munay-ki, energy/aura work, Systemic work, Emotional Freedom Technique(EFT), certified Emotion code facilitator TIFF provider and participated in many other courses/workshops.

What does systemic work mean?
We are all part of a system, a family is a system, a partnership is a system, your workspace & friendship is a system. All of our unconscious behavior, beliefs and patterns stem from our systemic background. We all have systems that work for us and against us. Systemic work gives insight into your systems, dynamic and patterns. It brings healing and understanding, knowing and recognizing your own system.

How long have you been a Life Coach?
I have coached people since I was 12 years old, for 7 years now I charge people for my coaching service. My company name is ‘Splendid Coaching.’

So you must be an old soul?
Yes, I am. Via regression therapy, I have gained an idea of some of my past life. After I had done that, I had a much better understanding of myself. Parts of the puzzle I was dealing with, it brought me clarity.

What are your goals?
My business and personal goals are basically the same. That is: “..To enable as many people as possible to be their truth, speak their truth and live their own truth…”.

What does success mean to you personally?
I define success as being at ease with whatever is presented and being nonjudgmental when it presents itself.

What is your BIG WHY or driving motivation to be whom you are right now?
I believe that purpose nowadays is very overrated. I define my purpose as: “to be fully myself”.

Meaning that whatever crosses my path, I can fully show up as me, to be at ease with whatever is presented on my journey called “life”.

What are the challenges that you are dealing with? And how are you dealing with these different challenges you confront?
Life in itself is a challenge, day by day; step by step; breath by breath. I can understand that and I stick with it, instead of issuing coping strategies or complaining like: “why me or poor me”. I try to first have awareness of what is coming in. An emotion is a message from my body, I ask myself what do I need to see or learn from this and then respond in the most effective way possible. And sometimes that means no response at all.

Do you use your inner voice to evaluate when dilemma’s show up? How does that work for you?
Yes, I listen very good to my body. I first sit with it, when something comes up.

Tune into my intuition and take the most logical, simple step.

How are you trying also to keep up with your personal knowledge and skills levels?
Through the books that I read, through videos, connections with other people, through life itself and through nature.

What are your strengths?
I easily make a real connection with people and I can feel and sense somebody. I am a good listener.

I am humble and I constantly try to stay and be “in the present” and show up without judgement. I can also let people be whom they want to be/are.

What do you mean with that, let them be whom they want to be?
Well, I can show up as a loving presence and I can easily give people the space that they need. Not everybody is able to do just that, giving other people space.

What is a trait that is “work in progress” for you and that you really want to improve?
My stubbornness. I can be very stubborn at times, which has its positives sometimes and sometimes its negatives. That’s where my ‘Taurus’ kicks in.

Do you have hobbies or interests that you are also passionate about?
I love to dance, I love music, and I love observing people. I can observe people all day long.

If you as Kamlawatie would meet a stranger in the bus (let say in Holland or the US) and they would ask you to introduce yourself what would you answer?
Most of the time I will say: I am Kamla, I am at your service, tell me about yourself.

You know that Kamlawatie means “White Lotus” and in fact it represents my life up to now very well. A lotus starts growing from the mud and develops itself into a beautiful flower. In fact, that is how I feel my life has been up to now, I am this flower now.

How would you describe Kamlawatie in one word or one sentence?
At peace and powerful.

Whom are the persons that have inspired you the most in your life and career?
People in general and not one specifically, but many people you talk to, induce new insights and wisdom when you talk to them.

Where do you want to be 20 years from now with your career?
I want to embody more truth, be more me.

What would you want your Loved Ones, family, friends and others to say about you let’s say 20 years from now?
We are glad she exists.

What makes you stay optimistic about the future of Curaçao?
am optimistic, because we have the power and we can create a Curaçao as amazing as we want.

Is there anything else that you would like to add?
Own your strength, live it, use it and be it. Furthermore, we need each other to create impactful transformations in all walks of life. Nobody can do it alone, so work together, learn together and support one another.
